Soul Cap is a Black-owned, British swim brand. They create swim caps that can fit over Black hairstyles like locs, braids, and afros.
At the end of June 2021, Metro UK reported that the International Swimming Federation (FINA) banned the use of Soul Caps in international competitions. Yet, the caps were allowed for “recreational and teaching purposes”. FINA received public backlash for this decision.
On July 2, 2021 FINA released a media statement announcing they are reconsidering their decision.
On September 1, 2022, Soul Cap was officially approved by FINA.
According to Metro UK, FINA executive director Brent Nowicki said approval of the swimming cap followed “a period of review and discussion on cap design between FINA and Soul Cap over the past year”.
FINA approving Soul Cap is sure to encourage people to swim competitively and recreationally.
