What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a mashup of badminton, tennis, and ping pong. The objective of this sport is to hit the ball over the net and keep it inbounds.
This sport uses paddles and perforated plastic balls. It is played on a badminton-size court with a modified tennis net. It can be played as singles or doubles (two teams of two players).
Why Should You Play Pickleball?
Here’s why you should give pickleball a try:
- Beginner-friendly: Pickleball is easy to learn. It is comparably easier to learn than tennis.
- Socially Fun: This sport is a great way to meet new people and hang out with old friends.
- Great Workout: Playing pickleball is a full-body workout. This sport improves your hand-eye coordination, reflexes, and agility.
- Easy on the Joints: Compared to high-impact sports, pickleball is gentler on your joints.
Pickleball for Beginners: Getting Started
Ready to embrace your pickleball ? Here’s what you’ll need:
- Paddle: A basic wooden paddle is perfect for beginners.
- Comfortable Clothing and Sneakers: Hit the court in clothes that allow for easy movement. Court shoes or sneakers with good traction will keep you safe on the court.
- Hydration: Stay hydrated throughout the game with a reusable water bottle.
- Sun Protection: Don’t forget a hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun.
Pickleball for Beginners: A Quick Guide
Ready to hit the court? Here’s a quick rundown of the essential pickleball rules:
- The Court: Pickleball is played on a badminton-sized court with a slightly modified tennis net (34 inches at the center and 36 inches at the sides).
- The Equipment: You’ll need a pickleball paddle and a pickleball.
- Serving: Serves must be underhand and diagonally aimed into the opponent’s service zone.
- The Kitchen: There’s a no-volley zone near the net called the “kitchen” (7 feet from the net on each side). You can’t volley the ball (hit it in the air) while standing in the kitchen.
- Scoring: Games are typically played to 11 points, win by two.
Ready to Play?
Now that you know the basics, it’s time to find a court and start playing! Many community centers and park facilities offer pickleball courts for public use.
Remember to grab your paddle and serve up some fun!
