Hey bestie, it’s your Internet BFF, Kaylannk here! Let’s talk MSM.

As a beauty blogger, I’m constantly on the hunt for natural beauty remedies that you and I can add to our beauty shelves. Recently, I’ve heard about MSM. People are talking about MSM and its connection to hair growth, which personally piqued my interest. Let’s explore what I’ve learned about the product that could be the answer to your hair growth woes.

What is MSM?

Methylsulfonylmethane, or MSM, is a naturally occurring sulfur compound that has been linked to thicker, stronger, and faster-growing hair. According to Healthline, MSM is found naturally in humans, green plants, and animals.

How can MSM promote hair growth?

MSM promotes hair growth by increasing your daily consumption of sulfur. Sulfur is a key component in keratin production. Keratin is the protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. Sulfur also contributes to stronger and thicker hair. Hair growth is about length retention. You can retain more hair strands when your hair is strong and thick verse brittle and thin.

The Research on MSM and Hair Growth:

While research is still ongoing, two studies suggest promising results:

  • A 2009 study found that applying MSM topically along with magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) promoted hair growth in mice.
  • A 2019 study on human participants showed taking MSM orally as a supplement improved hair appearance and thickness. Additionally, taking higher doses of MSM offered greater benefits. ‍
  • A 2022 study found topically applied MSM reduces hair loss in male mice.

Outside of these studies, people have documented and reported experiencing improved hair growth and overall hair health after using MSM supplements or hair products.

Here’s how your hair can benefit from MSM:

  • Increased keratin production
  • Improved scalp circulation
  • Reduce scalp inflammation
  • Strengthened hair strands
  • Promotes hair growth
  • Reduces hair loss

The benefits of MSM are not limited to your hair. MSM can also improve your skin health, joint health, and even your immune system.

How to use MSM for hair growth:

There are three main ways to incorporate MSM into your hair care routine:

  1. Oral supplements: Look for MSM supplements in capsule or powder form. Dosage recommendations vary, so start with the manufacturer’s instructions and consult your doctor if needed.
  2. Topical products: Purchase shampoos, conditioners, and hair masks that contain MSM. Patch test any new product before applying it to your entire scalp.
  3. Diet: Increase your intake of sulfur-rich foods.

Is MSM right for you?

MSM is generally considered safe for most people. However, it’s always advisable to consult your doctor before taking any new supplements, especially if you have any underlying health conditions. Additionally, keep in mind that individual results may vary, and it’s important to be patient and consistent when trying any hair growth regimen.

Remember, a good hair care routine will give you the best chance of achieving your hair goals.

Written with lots of care,
