My Plan to Ace Your Exams: A 7-Day Midterm Survival Guide
Hey bestie, it’s your Internet BFF, Kaylannk here! Can we talk about the feeling you get when you realize midterms are around the corner? You know the one – when you get that sinking sensation in your stomach. Suddenly, your casual to-do list becomes a priority and the phrase “I have to study” becomes your entire vocabulary. I’ve been there, staring at textbooks instead of opening them.
But here’s the thing I’ve learned: a little bit of planning goes a long way. This post is not a guide to cram or pull an all-nighter. This post is a midterm survival plan that’s designed to help you ace your exams and manage your stress. Are you ready to take on midterms with confidence? Read my breakdown.

Day 7: The Big Picture Day
This is the day to take a deep breath and get organized. The goal is not to start studying everything, but to understand exactly what you need to do.
- Step 1: Gather Your Materials. Place one course’s syllabus, notebook, slide decks, tests, and old assignments in one place. Repeat for each of your courses.
- Step 2: Create a Master Topic List. For each class, write down every topic that will be on the exam.
- Step 3: Build Your Schedule. Refer to your master list of topics and block out specific study times for each topic. Be realistic! 90-minute study sessions have always worked for me.
My Tip: Get a new pack of index cards to write down questions, definitions, and concept descriptions.
Day 6 & 5: The Deep Dive Days
With your schedule in place, it’s time to tackle the core material. The goal for these two days is to review the most challenging or dense topics.
- Step 1: Focus on the Hard Stuff. Don’t procrastinate on the topics you find most difficult. Dive into them first while your mind is fresh.
- Step 2: Re-read & Re-write. Read through your notes and textbook chapters. Then, re-write your notes in a simplified way. This process helps you internalize the information better than just re-reading.
- Step 3: Condense Your Notes. Create a one-page “cheat sheet” for each major topic and/or course. This helps you identify the most important information and forces you to organize it logically.
My Tip: Set a timer! Use the Pomodoro Technique (25 minutes of focused work, 5-minute break) to stay on track and avoid burnout. On your breaks, stand up and stretch or grab a healthy snack.
Day 4: The Practice Day
Now that you’ve reviewed the material, it’s time to test your knowledge. This is a critical step in your midterm study plan.
- Step 1: Do a Practice Exam. If your professor provides one, use it. If not, find one online or create your own using old homework assignments. Complete the exam under timed conditions to simulate the real exam.
- Step 2: Flashcard Fun. Turn key terms and formulas that you missed on the practice exam into flashcards. This active recall method is a powerful way to make sure the information sticks.
- Step 3: Teach a Friend. The best way to know if you’ve truly mastered a topic is to try and teach it to someone else. Grab a study buddy and take turns explaining key concepts.
My Tip: Listen to a study playlist. Pick a playlist with instrumental or classical music to help you focus without getting distracted.
Day 3 & 2: The Refine & Rest Days
The goal for these days is to polish your knowledge and prioritize your well-being.
- Step 1: Light Review Only. Go back over your condensed notes and flashcards. Focus on areas where you struggled during your practice exams. Avoid introducing any new material.
- Step 2: Get Moving. Go for a walk or hit the gym. Physical activity is a proven stress reliever and helps your brain retain information better.
- Step 3: Sleep. It can be tempting to pull an all-nighter, but research shows that sleep is crucial for memory consolidation. Aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.
Day 1: The Final Prep Day
The day before the exam is about calming your nerves and doing some final light prep.
- Step 1: A Quick Scan. Go over your cheat sheets and flashcards one last time. Focus on reviewing, not memorizing.
- Step 2: Pack Your Bag. Get your backpack ready with everything you’ll need: pencils, scantron sheet, calculator, student ID, and/or a water bottle.
- Step 3: Go to Bed Early. Get a full night’s sleep. This is the most important thing you can do for your brain. You’ve done the work; now let your mind rest.
