The Best Sunscreens That Don’t Leave A White Cast

Black girls with sunscreen in hand

Hey bestie, it’s your Internet BFF, Kaylannk here! Let’s talk sunscreen.

Summer on the horizon, and summer days are for soaking up the Sun. When you are out enjoying the Sun, it is important to use sunscreen because it protects our skin from sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. As a Black woman, I know how difficult it is to find the right sunscreen. We all want protection from harmful UV rays, but let’s be real – sunscreens that leave a white cast and greasy skin are a no go.  To all my melanated friends, there are amazing sunscreens that are formulated just for us.

Here’s what to look for:

  • Mineral vs. Chemical: Mineral sunscreens (often labeled “physical”) sit on top of the skin and deflect UV rays. Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and convert them to heat. Mineral sunscreens are generally better for melanated people because it is less likely to leave a white cast.
  • Broad Spectrum SPF 30+: This means protection from UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can cause premature aging and wrinkles, while UVB rays can cause sunburn and skin cancer. It’s also important to choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
  • Non-comedogenic: This means it won’t clog your pores, which is a must for acne-prone skin.

Now, let’s get to the best products!
